FRED BOUTIQUE-MILWAUKEE'S BEST

A Diva is only as good as her last grand adventure.
I came to this conclusion while shopping for the latest and greatest dress in a small city; after living in a very BIG city for many years. I wanted to find something that was unique and complimented my personality as well as my style of dress. I have friends in Milwaukee who often complain about there being no where to shop, and out of frustration they hit the mall, with all of its limitations and poor window displays or they give up and give their money to a mega store like “Target”. Oh La La! This must stop! Sure Forever 21 is a great location for filler pieces, but one of the first rules of style is that you NEVER buy the complete outfit off of a mannequin unless you shop boutique! How will anyone know when a Diva shows up, if she looks like the rest of the room? There are many fabulous boutiques, salons, spas, restaurants, wine bars, art dealers and festivals in this fair city to make BIG City living a breeze in this petit market- I have done the research and I am here to share it with you
As I mentioned, my return to Milwaukee from Chicago has been met with tons of criticism, mostly from people who have never visited our fair city. When people find out that I moved, I get the reaction as if I left Will Smith for Flava Flav. The follow up question is, “What’s so great about Milwaukee?” Well I could rattle off about Laverne and Shirley or The Fonz but even I wasn’t living here then, nor do those things excite me. I decided to poke around and really find out what deserves the title “Milwaukee’s Best” other than the beer; and if someone had the chance to chose between visiting Milwaukee and Chicago, why they should take 94 West.
I am here to tell you that Milwaukee has many gems in its fair city, and for a fashionista like me it is important to know where these gems are located, and how they work for me. I tend to venture downtown toward the Third Ward or on the east side, because generally you will find a new boutique among the buildings that you never noticed before. Driving down Water Street, I decided to re-visit a personal favorite Fred’s Boutique, and I was glad I did. What initially caught my eye was the vacant store with naked dress mannequins. Immediately I thought that they closed…and I was sad. Luckily for me that was not the case. They convienently moved directly next door to a dual level space. I parked my car, and trotted on in. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but let me tell you what I saw blew me away! Never before in Milwaukee have I been so taken aback by a potential shopping experience. I was standing in the perfect boutique. I felt as if I was in Soho, New York between Betsey Johnson and Rachel Roy showrooms.
The re-vamp of Fred’s Boutique offers shoppers and voyeurs alike an eyeful of color and shopping candy to devour. Every square foot of this store gave me something new, from the brilliant glam jewelry displays to the stylish garments, to the Hollywood chandeliers, the only thing missing was my personal paparazzi team.
The clothing and jewelry selection is key to the success of a fabulous boutique, but so is the layout. After seeing my excitement, Annie, the store manager asked me if I would like to see the upstairs, but I think she already knew I did. Up the staircase, into the loft I was exposed to even more unique décor. Never before have I seen a Victorian style bed in the middle of a boutique. The upstairs is designed like the bedroom of a movie star with its decorative chandeliers, fresh floral and vintage mirrors. The effect really rubs off on you while selecting garments to try on. You feel like you are a pampered star. There are amazing stylists on hand to assist you with the look, and to add accessories that take your look to the next level.
Ladies, I would like to offer the title of “Milwaukee’s Best” to Fred’s Boutique. It is the best boutique that I have seen and experienced in our fair city. Another reason to skip the mall and shop local!

Sources of N'spiration

Sources of Inspiration

Can we just take a moment and discuss a few people who simply amaze me, inspire me, and make me so happy! I would like to Highlight Rachel Roy. I recently had the opportunity to meet her, okay not recently but in September of 2009 at her Macy's showing in Chicago. I had an amazing time, not only am I a fan of her work, but I am a fan of the woman. Rachel is an amazing talent but even more so-she is humble and very approachable. I aspire to have a very successful children's clothing line called Pineapple-Eggplant tm and when I completed my first round of samples, I sent her 4 items-because I read that she had a 6 month old. Allow me to preface that when I send items to celebs or their reps, I don't expect a reply...why because they are busy, a lot of the time they think they laugh at the new people, etc.... well about 1 week after mailing it, I get a phone call from her assistant asking me for my mailing address....3 days later I get a hand written note from Rachel Roy. I was floored! I never wanted to continue to pursue my dream more than that day. I still have the note and I smile every time I see it. I don't know much more about her background besides what I have read, however my interactions with her face to face and via snail mail have been great.

In business, in life I believe that you should ALWAYS be approachable. You never know who is watching, and you never know how you will affect or inspire someone to reach greater heights.

Thank You Rachel and know that you have many people praying for your continued success!

Toast to Luxury!

TOAST TO LUXURY

“Beautiful Music when Champagne Flutes Click, eh…” Jay Z

I am a Libra, so I love beauty. I try to find beauty in everything, from art, fashion, cuisine, home décor, and my new favorite…Champagne. The really fun and awesome thing about Champagne is that there are so many varieties, and like wine the quality of the drink is not always determined by the price. Typically when champagne is a beverage option, people go with what is most familiar, such as Moet & Chandon. While they offer a great selection, White Star to Rose, (my personal favorite being the Moet Black Label,) this is not the only brand on the market. With so many champagne’s available that offer great taste, and that are affordable which one is the best for you?
Sparkling Wine is Champagnes Fraternal Twin.

Sparkling white wines are very similar in taste to Champagne; some wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. My favorite being Cava, it is Spain’s signature white wine bubbly. According to Wine Enthusiast, in the top rated and palate fooling category is the 91 Gramona III Lustros Gran Reserva Cava, prices at about $45. It is a toasty, yeasty, ultra-rich cava with a Champagne personality. In the top values Cava you can find the 86 Freixenet NV Nevada Semi-Dry Cava-it has a bouquet of powdered sugar, white fruits, and shows of tropical fruits mango and papaya. Its finish is clean and dry with some spice. You can find this heavenly selection for $9.00

Champagne has enjoyed an aura of luxury from its conception in the 17th century. Champagne is cultivated in the northern most part of France. Epernay and Reims are the two main cities of Champagne’s origin; they are about 90 miles northeast of Paris. Champagne is a white wine made mostly from red grapes, to avoid any tinting the grapes are pressed immediately after picking. With the addition of yeast, and a strictly controlled temperature the alcoholic fermentation begins to take place. It takes about 8 to 10 weeks for the fermentation of the bottle to become complete, at this point when the carbonic gas has turned still wine into sparkling wine, the yeast will ferment giving the wine additional flavor and body.

There are many types of Champagne to select from, choices include Brut containing a small sugar content to Blanc de Blanc, and its fresh and crisp taste is pressed only from white Chardonnay grapes. A couple that come highly recommended for flavor and good sparkle and flavor harmony include: Veuve Cliquot priced around $ 45 and Pol Roger.
Ways to enhance your Champagne Experience:

Wine and Food pairings are essential in enjoying the complexities of wine; this educates the consumer about the flavor, aging, and fermentation process. I recommend that you try Champagne and Food pairings as well. While wine and champagne are from the same family, they just have different aging, storing and bottling processes. Food not only helps educate your palate, if kicks the flavor and tasting experience up a notch!
Here is a fantastic way to impress your friends:
Grab a bottle of Bubbly (I would suggest Louis Roederer) and the following fruit and cheeses: Brie
  • Mild Cheddar
  • Smoked Gouda
  • Crisp green apples
  • strawberries
  • raspberries
  • Prepare them on a nice plate, and pour the champagne into beautiful flutes. Sip and see what flavors you taste, add some fruit or cheese to compliment the arrangement.
Champagne and Sunday Brunch

In the larger market’s you find that Sunday Mornings, and afternoons are rarely spent indoors eating toast and oatmeal, you get up, get dressed and go to Brunch. Sunday Brunch doesn’t consist of pajama pants, sweatshirts and messy ponytails…it consists of great friends, many varieties of Eggs Benedict and bottomless Mimosas! One of my favorite Milwaukee gems is Trocodero’s. Besides offering an amazing menu and late brunch hours-they offer an awesome drinks selection featuring many moderately priced Champagne infused drinks. Check them out when they re-open after renovation.

If you choose to stay at home and create amazing brunch memories with your loved ones, might I suggest straying away from the typical orange juice Mimosa and try a Champagne Peach Bellini.

6 Oz of your favorite champagne
1 peach pureed
Puree the peach and fill half of a tall champagne flute, top off the peach with your favorite champagne and enjoy!

Milwaukee is not just about beer! Do something different this week and check out these events where popping champagne is encouraged!

The Champagne Lounge – this Saturday February 20th experience a new monthly rotating event themed around the essence of Champagne and celebrations! Toast to Luxury with a free glass of Champagne from 9-10pm at the Starbar 643 N. Milwaukee.

Also make sure you check out Milwaukee’s best champagne venue, Cuvee located in the Historic Third Ward, they hold the bubbly crown with 100 different varieties of champagnes and sparkling wines. You can enjoy these grapes by the glass, bottle or in creative champagne cocktails. Sip Champagne and listen to Milwaukee’s best musical talent at R & B Live, this Sunday February 21st at Cuvee. Savoir-Faire for Milwaukee

Savoir-Faire for Milwaukee

Over the last couple of weeks I have had a few discussions with friends and a couple of business owners about what it means to “know how to dress”. The business owners that I conversed with own fine nightlife establishments here in Milwaukee, and when they are setting precedence for the venue’s target audience, dress code and attire are extremely important. This ranks highest on the list for a couple of reasons, the first being image. If you have a venue that is new, elegant, top of the line in décor, and serves top shelf drinks, the last thing you want is a party full of misfits. How is this usually determined? By the way one presents themselves. Your sense of style is your exterior business card.

Having the right pieces will get you in the door, and it has nothing to do with how much they cost. Far too often many party goers are turned away because they attempted to enter an establishment that has a dress code, wearing jeans and tennis shoes, or a hooded sweatshirt and a baseball cap. There are several venues that allow this attire; usually they are called sports bars bowling alleys, or pool halls. When you want to attend a nice party at a downtown location, you should be ready and able to dress the part.

Going back to the discussions that I had with friends, we came to the conclusion that there are some people who just don’t know how to dress for occasions. Could it be true, that some adults still lack the knowledge of what is appropriate evening out attire? Worry not, I the self proclaimed “Red Bottom Diva” is here to give you a few pointers, so that the next time you step out, you wont be left out in the cold.

Here are a few KEY vocabulary words:

Fashion Forward: To be presumably hip, slick and cool this can mean anything from premium denim jeans for both men and women, accompanied with nice shoes, nice shirt. Here’s a hint- think Kanye West, Chris Brown, David Beckham, Common, Rhianna, Amber Rose, Kelly Rowland. (Notice I didn’t name any Jersey Shore Characters)

Grown & Sexy: This term is really about the state of attire, this means that men are not to be in jeans, but slacks or a suit, a tie is optional at this point, but it allows room for creativity…bowties and ascots are welcome. For women this term means savvy, leave the corsets and liquid leggings at home. Here’s a hint-think Andre 3000, Idris Elba, Ed Weswick, Halle Berry, Kate Hudson, Jennifer Lopez

A Black Tie: calls for formal attire. Men wear tuxedos, women wear cocktail, long dresses or dressy evening separates. Here’s a hint-Think Red Carpet- Terrace Howard, Johnny Depp, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Penelope Cruz, Eva Longoria-Parker, Halle Berry

Formal: usually means the same as Black Tie, but in some trendier cities like New York or Los Angeles, it could mean a black shirt, no tie with a tux. Women wear cocktail, long dresses or dressy evening separates. Here’s a Hint-think Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Robin Thicke, John Mayer, Gabbrielle Union.
After Five: means that tuxes are not required, nor are long dresses. An evening wedding (after 6 PM) would still dictate dark suits for him, and a cocktail dress for her. Daytime semi-formal events mean a suit for him and an appropriate short dress or dressy suit for her. Here’s a hint-Think Kim Kardashian, Nia Long, Sanaa Lathan,

Dress Casual: calls for dressed-up versions of casual looks. For him, it could be trousers and a sport coat, for her a dressy pants look. Jeans, shorts, T-shirts and other casual looks are not appropriate. Here’s a hint-Think Pharrell Williams, Andre 3000, Jennifer Lopez

Now that you have this understanding of what these venues are looking for, it may be helpful to know what’s currently in style:

Milwaukee Needs a Fashion Revolution

If you are anything like me, fashion is a passion. I have a weekly ritual of brunch, the latest fashion magazines, and re-watching seasons of either Sex and the City or Gossip Girl. I have an appetite for those classic finds that can take an outfit from “Oh” to “Oh La La”. It could be the right pair of shoes, handbag, or an item from an indie designer or a vintage jewelry accent that does the trick.
The question is when you are in a petite market such as Milwaukee, where do you find such items? I consider myself a fashion headhunter, and I find joy in seeking out these items-but a hobby such as this takes time, patience and a few connections. I don’t limit myself to one city when I am looking for that something special, however I love to know about all of the hidden gems of the city, that make my searches easier.
In my quest for high fashion Milwaukee, I was able to locate a boutique so original, so revolutionary, so diverse it satisfied all my shopping cravings. I found The Boutique Revolution, Milwaukee’s underground fashion apprentice. This Boutique Revolution and Gallery, was established October 2009 in Milwaukee, by a Sheena Luckett. The mantra is to serve the greater Milwaukee and Wauwatosa area with original art and unique fashion designs. Standing behind Fashion, Art, and Creative Freedom true or budding fashionista’s will have no problem selecting something they love.
Boutique Revolution and Gallery is dedicated to the creative satisfaction, artistic freedom, and the progression of all people and artists in our community. They accomplish this by providing affordable gallery space, inspirational workshops, and community events, all in an organic atmosphere. Boutique Revolution not only serves as a community building landscape, but also as a platform for evolving fashion. It is an extension to an annual fashion production "The Fashion Revolution", serving as it's headquarters. They also house one-of-a-kind fashion designs created by local and national designers.
I fell in love with the vintage section of the store, and found a one of a kind Georgette dress that I will debut in Spring 2010! I was impressed by the independent designers that occupy floor space; and encouraged to support their efforts. I know that his is exactly what the budding fashion community of Milwaukee needs, and after speaking with the owner about her plans for Boutique Revolution’s future, I can say it will only get better!
Make sure you check them out and get your tickets now for the Fashion Revolution’s Annual Fashion Show. For more information visit the website

Kanye West and Amber Rose...Fashion Icons?

What do ya'll think??? I love it!!! read Kanye's rant about fashion and the non-believers. If I had his kind of money and access to my favorite designers- I would rock some outlandish things too! We dream about it-they LIVE it! At least they get to drink the Kool-Aid and live it up....in PARIS! At the end of the day Fashion is living life with out borders. Its organic and often will come with criticism but think of those that set standards in the fashion world... better yet think about those who you decided to dress like! Check out his blog below....

"WHEN IT'S ALL SAID AND DONE, REMEMBER THE FEARLESS, REMEMBER THE DREAMERS, REMEMBER THOSE WHO REPRESENT THE GHETTO...THE FAIRY TALE OF NOTHING TO SOMETHING. I'M BRIEFLY SADDENED BY NEGATIVE COMMENTS, BUT I HAVE TO REMEMBER THOSE PEOPLE ARE SCARED, INCAPABLE OR JUST PLAIN IDIOTS. WE ARE THE FUCKING ROCK STARS BABY. NO COCAINE, JUST LIFE MY NIGGAS!! NO COCAINE, JUST LIFE! IT'S FUNNY TO ME WHEN FASHION BLOGGERS DOWN OUR OUFITS AND THEN SUPER JOCK OUTLANDISH SHIT ON THE RUNWAY BUT THEN THEY DRESS MAD PRUDE AND DON'T LIVE FASHION. WE LIVE IT MAN. FUCK THAT, WE LIVE IT!!! WE LIVE IT SO HARD PEOPLE LIVE THROUGH US! WE REPRESENT YOUR INNER SPIRIT!! THE CHILD IN US ALL, THE BRUTAL HONESTY, THE NAIVETY, THE BRAVE WARRIOR, THE ADRENALINE THAT ALLOWS A MOTHER TO LIFT A CAR IF HER CHILD WAS TRAPPED UNDER IT! REMEMBER, THERE WAS A TIME WHEN EVERYBODY DISSED MICHAEL JACKSON EVERY CHANCE THEY COULD. IMAGINE THE PRESSURE OF BEING A TRUE ICON. VERY FEW HUMAN BEINGS ARE STRONG ENOUGH TO TAKE CONSTANT HATE!!! IF WE DON'T DO WHAT YOU FEEL IS THE SHIT, YOU BEAT US UP VERBALLY AND MENTALLY, LIKE A CATHOLIC SCHOOL TEACHER BEATING A CREATIVE STUDENT INTO SUBMISSION. I CAN HEAR YOU SCREAMING 'COLOR INSIDE THE LINES!!!' WELL FUCK YOUR COLORING BOOK, COLOR BY NUMBERS APPROACH TO LIFE. AT THE END OF THE DAY WHO ARE WE HURTING??? OH "THE NEW BLACK???" SINCE BARACK IS PRESIDENT BLACKS DON'T LIKE FUR COATS, RED LEATHER, AND FRIED CHICKEN ANY MORE?! WHEN YOU TRULY UNDERSTAND CULTURAL SETTINGS, BOUNDARIES, AND OUR MODERN DAY CASTE SYSTEMS, THEN YOU CAN FEEL THE GLORY AND PAIN FROM THE DAYS OF KINGS IN AFRICA TO THE NEW KINGS OF THE MEDIA. LET THE BALL PLAYERS DANCE AFTER THEY SCORE! IT'S LIFE MY NIGGAS, IT'S LIFE! REMEMBER CLOTHING IS A CHOICE. WE WERE BORN NAKED!!! FRESH IS AN OPINION, LOVE IS OBJECTIVE, TASTE IS SELECTIVE, AND EXPRESSION IS MY FAVORITE ELECTIVE. NO MORE POLITICS OR APOLOGIES!!!"
